A flat used as drug den has been closed down. Police claimed the flat, 234A Pall Mall, Chorley, which is near old people's accommodation, was used in connection with the use and supply of class A drugs.

A three-month closure order was granted on the flat under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act, 2003, at a civil hearing held at Chorley Magistrates' Court last Thursday.

The property backs on to Black Horse Street, which is home to many elderly residents whose lives had been affected by activities at the premises.

Speaking after the hearing, PC Richard Booth, of Chorley multi-agency problem solving team, said: "We are very pleased with the outcome of the hearing.

"Substances believed to be drugs and equipment, including needles and weighing scales, have been found on the premises during searches.

"The activities which have emanated from this address over the last few months have brought misery to a large section of the community in this area.

"In particular, the elderly residents of Black Horse Street, who have suffered intimidation, harassment and disturbance to their quiet way of life.

"As well as the property being closed we are making further inquiries regarding drug use in the property and criminal prosecutions are likely to follow." PC Booth praised the nearby community for their support in gathering intelligence needed to close the property.

Inspector Ian Roberts, of Chorley Police, said: "This is the third such closure applied for by the police in Chorley since April.

"If any other properties are used in this way we will use the new legislation to address the problem and would urge people to contact us if they have concerns of this nature."
