A street name sign is 'miles' off the mark according to a disgruntled resident of an Euxton housing estate.

He believed he lived on Milestone Meadow, Euxton, until he saw a new road sign installed on the estate showing the name as Mile Stone Meadow.

All previous signs on the estate were spelt with just the two words - Milestone Meadow - but when the next phase of the building work was completed by developers Taylor Woodrow, the new signs showed the name as three words.

Confusion also reigns on nearby Belfry Close where signs have been installed spelling it as Belfrey Close.

Tony Hoe, who lives on the estate said: "What an example to set. I believe the name of the road has been registered officially as Mile Stone Meadow. This would mean the incorrect spelling of the word milestone has been used and the majority of the signs are wrong.

"Future generations of children are going to be brought up looking at street signs that depict an incorrect spelling of the word.

"This type of thing may seem pedantic, but to have things correct would set a good example.

"Some companies have picked up the incorrect spelling from their postal address computer software."

"We all make mistakes from time to time but I think the honourable thing to do is to rectify them."

He added that the confusion over the name is one of the reasons why Chorley Borough Council has failed to adopt the road, even though the first houses were completed in 1997.

A spokesperson for Chorley Borough Council said: "All aspects of the building work on the development, including the street name plates, are planned, constructed and paid for by the developer. We have carried out inspections at the Mile Stone Meadow development and identified many points which need the developer's attention, including defective street name plates." A spokesman for Taylor Woodrow said: "We are aware there are problems with signage at our development at Euxton and appreciate this could be confusing for residents.

"We welcome the opportunity to clarify that two road sign misspellings should read Mile Stone Meadow and Belfry Close.

"We are due to appoint a contractor to complete these highway works and we hope to resolve this situation as soon as possible."
