A couple who were left literally without a roof over their heads after a tornado swept through their village, have finally moved back home six months on.

Adam Porter and Helen Simpson had to move out after a freak storm destroyed part of their home.

Their return has coincided with the birth of their first child, Archie, who was born last Thursday.

The 70mph mini-tornado struck on the May Day Bank Holiday. It was about 100 yards in diameter and took the roof off their bungalow in Hoghton Lane, Hoghton, wrecking their loft and garage.

Although it only lasted a few minutes, 25 firefighters and 10 police officers attended.

The pair, who had been out that day, had joked about the twister they saw in the sky as they drove home. Little did they know that tiles, fence panels, breeze blocks and even full roofs, including their own, were being blown 100 yards down the road.

Keen runner Adam missed the New York Marathon because the disruption of finding alternative accommodation interrupted his training.

He said: "The chimney had completely fallen in and landed in the bedroom over the computer desk.

"I could easily have been sat there. We were so lucky we weren't in.

"It was such a mess and debris everywhere. The roof was gone."

"We stayed with Helen's relatives down the road, which was great, but it is good to be bringing Archie to start life in his real home."

Around 30 nearby properties were damaged where the tornado struck.
