A 25-year-old woman who beat a rare form of bone cancer has started work as a full-time fund raiser for Cancer Research UK.
Sarah McPhee, of New Hall Lane, Preston, has kick started her new career by organising a Christmas gala at Hoghton Tower on Tuesday, December 6.
Singers from the Royal Northern College of Music will be performing at the gala event and hot mulled wine and mince pies will be part of the ticket price of £25.
Three years ago Sarah discovered a bump on her left knee.
Following blood tests was diagnosed with a bone cancer called osteoscarcoma. The devastating blow came while she was in the final year of studying fashion management at the London College of Fashion.
Sarah said: "I felt completely devastated when the blood tests showed I had cancer.
"Doctors told me that I had more chance of winning the lottery than being diagnosed with this particular kind of cancer."
After thirty weeks of chemotherapy and an operation to remove a large chunk of bone, which was replaced with a metal prosthesis, she as given the all clear.
The former All Hallows high school pupil said she was supported during this time her boyfriend Kevin, and family and friends. She added: "It was a tough time, but it's great to feel so well and positive about my new job with Cancer Research UK."
"I hope a lot of people will come along and support the Christmas Gala as it will be a brilliant opportunity to celebrate the achievements of everyone who has survived cancer, but it will also be a time to remember those who weren't as lucky as myself."
The event starts at 7.30pm. For more information email manchesteroffice@cancer.org.uk or call 0161 772 5555.
