I CAN appreciate that some people are concerned about the possible selling of Morecambe Town Hall. However, for me, there are great benefits in the council's proposed new scheme.
The most obvious one for Morecambe is that it would have a purpose-built Town Hall in the centre of the town. This will have a significant impact on the local economy, bringing in lots more people to spend money in the shops there.
I don't think the same benefits could be obtained from the current town hall. First, any conversions of the building would be expensive, and second, it is too far from the town centre both for people to get to and for staff to use the shops and cafes. Thirdly, it is expensive to run in terms of energy and upkeep.
Clearly, we need to be very careful that the costs of the new project add up. However, it seems to make good financial sense for the council to run its services from fewer buildings.
I also think if the plans come to fruition, that it will make very good sense for people in Morecambe.
Cllr Jon Barry, Lancaster.
