The original hip-swivelling Welsh wonder Shakin' Stevens is bringing his show to Preston on December 9.

Best known for 1980s hits This Ole House, Oh Julie and, of course, the ever-popular Merry Christmas Everyone, Shaky still plays to sell-out crowds. He told us about his highs and lows.

What inspired you to go into music?

It was already in my blood when I was born.

What's been the highlight of your career?

My first hit record after spending many years going up and down the motorway in an old tin van.

What is your all-time favourite song and why?

Too many to mention.

What's the most rock'n'roll thing you've done?

Many years ago, in the early days, we were doing a gig in London and the saxophonist. . . . well, this is how it was reported by Kris Griffiths in Record Collector magazine: "The saxophonist tried blowing flames from his mouth with lighter fluid. Suddenly the piano caught on fire. Stevens leapt offstage onto a light fitting which fused and a spark struck a guy's hair. The owners were faced with the scene of their floor ablaze and Stevens doing Tarzan swings over the punters frantically slapping someone's head, which was on fire. The act was toned down by the time he was appearing on Top Of The Pops."

Who is your all-time hero?

My mum, bringing up 13 children.

Who's the best person you've ever worked with?

I've worked with so many people and I can't single out just one person.

What is your idea of happiness?

A stress-free world.

What is your idea of hell?

A world full of stress.

What's the worst trouble you've been in?

Losing my driving licence for 18 months. Never again!

What's your most treasured possession?

It has to be my voice. Without it I wouldn't have my career.

What have you most regretted doing while drunk?

I can't remember -- I was drunk!

What's the best piece of advice you've received?

Don't drink!

Any regrets?

Yes, smoking.

Anything to add?

I've had a really good year this year with a top five album going gold in the UK, a number one album in Europe going platinum and now a successful DVD. My UK tour starts in November. I'm really looking forward to a fantastic year to come.
