The success of a scheme to train more people to be able to teach was celebrated.

The Lancashire Adult Learning project 'Want to Teach?' encourages black and ethnic minority people explore their aspiration to teach. During the past six months, 135 people have gained vital teaching skills by achieving an Open College Northwest qualification.

Kailash Parekh, the scheme co-ordinator, said: "We are delighted to have achieved 92 per cent success with the qualification.

"At the moment people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds are under represented in education so the 'Want to Teach?' project is helping to redress the balance.

"I am sure that the people who have worked so hard for their qualifications are as proud as I am with their achievements. Hopefully they will keep going and gain all the skills they need to become part of Lancashire's excellent teaching workforce."
