ALL kinds of sophisticated systems have been developed to cut crime.
CCTV cameras and various kinds of high-technology sensors are being employed to catch or deter criminals and those on the wrong side of the law increasingly make use of computer equipment themselves to lay their hands on other people's possessions.
But the complexity of anti-crime measures doesn't necessarily automatically reflect their success - as a very uncomplicated seasonal idea being introduced by Lancashire police shows.
Shoppers are being given small bells to be attached to purses and handbags so that they ring and give an early warning if anyone tries to grab them.
The scheme was launched in Northampton earlier this year because of the number of thefts from handbags hooked onto the back of buggies and trolleys or over the back of chairs.
But after 250 bells were handed out there were no reports of such crimes the following week.
Now after 40 bag snatches across Blackburn and Darwen it is hoped the free giveaway will stop thieves plaguing shoppers in the run-up to Christmas.
Let's hope this simple idea will prove an effective deterrent so people can shop without fear.
