A MAN who drove to Darwen for a face to face with his 'girlfriend' found himself at the centre of a frenzied attack, a court was told.

Blackburn magistrates heard that John Lupton was showered with glass as every window in his car was smashed with a pick axe handle.

As he tried to escape he was prodded with the shaft and then attacked by another man who leaned in to the car and punched him repeatedly. And defence solicitor Andrew Church-Taylor said it was a tale of unrequited love which had turned into a nightmare. Jason Smith, 19, of Hollins Grove, Darwen, pleaded guilty to assaulting John Lupton.

He was made subject to a community rehabilitation order for two years, ordered to do 100 hours community punishment and pay £500 compensation to Mr Lupton and £175 costs. Mr Church-Taylor said Mr Lupton had been told in no uncertain terms not to turn up in Darwen. Smith foolishly got involved.
