THE location of bridges determines our movements far more than most people realise. They avoid long detours, none more so than the Millennium bridge crossing the Rivers Ribble and Calder, promoted with much publicity a few years ago by Lancashire County Council.
It would help walkers of the Ribble Way avoid a mile walk, along roads, mostly without footpaths.
Now Lancashire County Council, in its wisdom, will not even consider a simple bridge across the Ribble, as was originally proposed!
It can find monies for a steel fence on Martholme Viaduct, which benefited few and was objected to by most local people.
In an age when we are encouraged to exercise by walking, these decisions are contrary to such a policy. So come on LCC, think again!
