This double live album was recorded during Wilco's four night sell-out hometown stand at the Vic Theatre in Chicago and superbly captures the energy of the seminal alt-rock group.
Wilco have an oft-changing line up, and a multi-instrumental sound that has evolved away from their country roots to something more electric, experimental and entertaining, though the country formula of catchy melancholy and twang still pops up here and there.
Their performances in Chicago featured songs from their last four albums. Highlights include the distorted ethereal guitars on death-ballad Via Chicago, an intimate lament, Misunderstood, which develops into an aggressive rock refrain, and the vast feedback loops and thumping piano that polish off the aching beauty of Poor Places.
Kicking Television is an impressive re-rendering of Wilco's studio genius that should appeal to old fans and serve as a fine introduction to the Wilco phenomenon for the uninitiated.
Released November 14, 2005.
