A WOMAN posing as a damsel in distress duped people into parting with cash after claiming her car had been stolen.

The con artist called at homes across Burnley and Pendle asking for up to £20 so she could get home.

Police today warned residents to be on their guard against tricksters. It is thought the woman also called at homes in Colne.

Sergeant Louise Darcy, from the police's fortress team which deals with car crime and burglaries in the area, said: "This type of deception is relatively rare, but we would always urge homeowners to be on their guard with unannounced callers and never to hand money over to a stranger if they are unsure of their motives."

The incidents took place in Burns Street, Burnley, and East Street, Nelson, at around 6.30pm and 6.45pm on Friday. The woman claimed her car had been stolen or it had broken down and she needed cash to get home.

Police said the woman, who left a name and false telephone number, could have also struck in Yorkshire.

She is described as 5ft 4ins, in her mid to late 20s, slim, with blonde shoulder length hair and well spoken. In one of the thefts she was wearing a three-quarter length coat and hat.

Sgt Darcy added: "We've had a number of reports about this woman and there may well be other people who have fallen prey to her act who have not yet realised they have been duped.

"If you have received a visit from her, or if you think you may know who she is, or where she is, then we would very much like to hear from you."
