RESIDENTS on a Darwen street where a man was hit by a car and killed are to campaign for safety measures.
Tom Bury, 62, of Council Terrace, suffered multiple injuries in Redearth Road, just yards from a pub he had been drinking in earlier in the evening.
Now residents are to start a petition, campaigning for speed bumps.
Today it was revealed that under plans for the proposed Darwen Academy, which was given outline planning permission for Redearth Road earlier this year, traffic calming is likely to be installed on the street.
Leanne Morgan, one of the organisers of the campaign, has lived on Redearth Road for four years.
She said: "The council are going to say, look, we are doing the academy in Redearth Road soon.
"But the houses aren't going to be demolished just yet.
"We are looking at years, and we aren't prepared to wait any more.
"This has shaken everybody, we have all got children.
"My daughter, Bethany, is six months old so she doesn't play out yet. But on some nights there are 20 kids playing out."
The campaign will call for traffic calming measures to be put in place, in particular speed bumps from the bottom of the road to the Sough Road bridge.
"The petition will then be sent on to Blackburn with Darwen Council's highways department.
Sunnyhurst ward councillor Dave Hollings said: "When the site was approved for outline planning permission one of the conditions was that there would be traffic calming on the road.
"But it is still a good thing to raise the issue, I have said to the campaigners by all means put in a petition and say to the council, make sure this happens. Keep pushing on it."
