A RETIRED solicitor has been honoured as the first member of Darwen Rotary Club to receive a Paul Harris Fellowship.
David Watson, was the club's 50th president in 1982/83.
Paul Harris Fellow recognition was created in memory of Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary, as a way of showing appreciation for contributions to the foundation's charitable and educational programme.
A person is made a Paul Harris Fellow when he is thought to have given outstanding service to his Rotary Club and the community.
Mr Watson, 78, of Sunnyhurst Lane, was presented with a pin, medallion and certificate during a special ceremony at Darwen Rotary Club's Charter Night celebrations at Whitehall Country Club, by the Assistant District Governor Roland Hailwood.
His father Arthur James was the club's founding president in 1933/4.
Mr Watson, who joined the Rotary Club 33 years ago, said: "The club was given the chance to choose someone they felt had given service to the club and to Rotary in general. One of the greatest parts of this though is that your own club has nominated you.
"I hadn't the slightest idea I was going to be made a Paul Harris Fellow and I felt rather humble. It is the first fellowship the club has given and it's a great honour."
Current president of Darwen Rotary Club, Roy Chatburn, said: "David was chosen for the service he has given to Rotary over a long period and the things he has done in the community. He has been a governor of various schools and has been involved with community organisations. He has also contributed to rotary fundraising."
