FRIENDS and families will be able to shine a light for someone special this Christmas to help raise vital funds for the East Lancashire Hospice.
With the Light up a Life campaign, people can place personalised decorations on Christmas trees in Blackburn Cathedral or Clitheroe Trinity Methodist Church for a donation.
Since its launch six years ago, the appeal has gone from strength to strength -- from raising £2,000 in 1999 to a staggering £25,000 last year.
And organisers hope to beat that record total this year.
Fundraiser Harry Grayson said: "It's a pretty simple idea. For a small donation to the hospice people can dedicate a light to a loved one at Christmas.
"It can be a thank you for the kindness given throughout the year.
"We don't stipulate any amount for the donation, all we do is ask is for people to be as generous as they can."
Once a light is bought, the owner will receive a personalised card to make the dedication.
Mr Grayson went on: "The event is unique because, not only does the recipient feel special or you may be comforted by remembering a close one, you are also helping the East Lancashire Hospice continue its vital care of so many terminally ill patients and their families at this special time of year."
It has been a special year for the hospice, which celebrated its 21st anniversary. Over the years it has helped 13,100 patients and their families.
Staff and volunteers will have a stand in the Mall in Blackburn from November 7 to 12 and 21 to 25 where donations can be made. The lights will be switched on at Trinity Methodist Church on Thursday, December 1, at 7pm, and on Tuesday, December 6, from 7.30pm at Blackburn Cathedral.
