Residents of a Blackpool street are fighting back after two nights of booze-fuelled yobbery during which cars were vandalised and a house broken into.

Neighbours on Newcastle Avenue are already joining their local residents association, ward councillors and police to talk about ways of tackling sporadic anti-social behaviour in the area.

Now some residents are calling on Blackpool Council, and mayor, Cllr Philip Dunne, to 'send a clear message' that yobbish antics, crime and vandalism will not be tolerated.

Eddie Fewings, chairman of Belle Vue Neighbourhood Watch Residents Association, said: "Wednesday and Friday nights were horrendous, with more than eight cars being vandalised by children high on drink and causing untold misery to people in the Newcastle Avenue area.

"The police reacted to the incidents efficiently, but other agencies are not acting effectively in deterring the behaviour. This is an urgent problem that needs addressing now."

The association urged council, youth offending team and probation and Crown Prosecution service officers, along with Blackpool Mayor Cllr Dunne -- also Talbot ward councillor for Newcastle Avenue -- to visit schools and hammer home the message that 'gangs of drunken youngsters' would not be tolerated.

Mr Fewings said: "The vast majority of children are well behaved, but this vocal and unruly minority are damaging the reputation of those children who want to live decent lives and enjoy their education.

"I urge the mayor to act and visit the schools as soon as possible to support the children who want to learn without being affected adversely by the behaviour of a few yobs."

Cllr Dunne said he was already heading to six Blackpool schools in coming weeks for 'meet the mayor' style visits, but that he would have to take into account the children's ages, and think very carefully about what he would say in any 'goodwill' message.

He said: "What Mr Fewings' said is something I will take on board.

"I am aware of the problems on Newcastle Avenue from thepolicing aspect.

"I do have regular contact with the community beat manager and the police community support officers.

"Three of them were up there last week and dispersed youngsters and brought some of them home to their parents, which is as much as they can do initially."
