TODAY we herald a victory for people power! And for the 2,000-plus people who backed our campaign to preserve the identity of the Queen's Lancashire Regiment, today's revalation is proof that people should never give up fighting for what they believe in.
The Queen's Lancashire Regiment (QLR) is being merged with the Carlisle-based King's Own Royal Border Regiment and the Liverpool-based King's Regiment.
The Army announced in December that the new force would be called the King's Lancashire and Border Regiment, causing outrage amongst opponents. They claimed the title diluted QLR's identity as Lancashire's county regiment and thousands of people backed an Evening Telegraph campaign against the move.
But the title has now been changed to the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment -- subject to Royal Assent from the Duke of Lancaster herself -- the Queen.
Army sources say the change came because they listened to the people who matter -- local people and the soldiers themselves.
And overjoyed members of The Queen's Lancashire Regiment said the name change was a victory for Evening Telegraph readers.
Months after the battle was seemingly lost, people power -- and common sense -- has won the day.
