IT'S great to see my former Burnley team-mates Steve Davis and Paul Gascoigne back in football again. The contrasts really couldn't be any greater.

They say men are from Mars and women are from Venus. Well Steve probably has his feet firmly on planet Earth more than anyone I've ever met, while Gazza is from a different planet altogether!

Burnley will undoubtedly benefit from Steve's return. It's clear that Burnley is his adopted, some would say spiritual home and the person I know will certainly be an honest, hard-working and key member of Steve Cotterill's backroom team.

A more level-headed individual you will not meet either. Steve was always on time, always clean shaven and never had a bad word to say about anybody - even opposing centre forwards who elbowed him in the face during games.

In fact, the most outrageous thing I think I've ever seen him do was reluctantly get up at a club karaoke one Christmas after half a shandy to give a rendition of Delilah!

But it was on the pitch Steve really came alive. With nearly 400 games behind him at Turf Moor, he knows what makes this great club tick and as a trusted former captain, I think it's fair to assume he should have an eye for a player to compliment the good work already being done by chief scout Cliff Roberts.

All in all it's a great, no risk appointment by Steve Cotterill and I'm sure 'Skip' will make a valuable contribution.

Can the same really be said of Gazza though, who is once again trying to reinvent himself, this time as manager of Kettering Town?

His appointment last week was met with the usual blinding of flash bulbs and you can't help but wish him all the best.

However, with Gazza comes baggage. A whole suitcase full. And I'm sure I'm not alone in expecting the world to come crashing around his ears for the umpteenth time.

The demons have been inside his head for a long time now and even during his brief spell at Turf Moor, it was clear to see he was a million miles from the great player we all knew.

The signs of age are etched into his face and even though he finally appears to have his life back on track and I wish him well, it still wouldn't surprise me to see him out of a job by the end of the season.
