MORECAMBE branch of the Yorkshire Bank is to close after its owners decided to further trim their operation.

The Marine Road Central branch is among 31 branches earmarked for closure by The National Australia Group.

The group first announced cuts in May - this decision comes in a second round of bad news for customers and staff.

A spokesman for banking union Unity says: "The Morecambe branch will close but at this stage we do not know too much more. There will be redundancies nationally and quite possibly locally but the bank says it will try and move staff to other locations.

"We are still annoyed with the National Australia Group because people have been loyal to branches for many years.

"That goes for both staff and customers - and this is not the way to treat them."

No-one was available to comment at Yorkshire Bank.

But Amicus National Officer Mary Alexander says: "UK Banks provide a crucial service to the community and our economic security depends on them. NAG have shelved their corporate responsibilities. The closures affect the most vulner-able areas of the community.

"Amicus is calling on NAG to reverse this decision and will be working to ensure that there will be no compulsory redundancies."
