North End chairman Derek Shaw has insisted PNE are not becoming a 'selling club' and pledged to use at least some of the Richard Cresswell cash on new players.

Shaw has revealed to the Citizen the sale of last season's top-scorer to Leeds United has already triggered a bid by North End for another player.

It's likely the mystery target will be either a left-sided player or a striker.

Shaw said: "I'm not going to say who it is, but there is a lot of media talk at the moment and none of it is accurate.

"We are doing all we can to help Billy strengthen the squad and all of the money we receive will be used in running Preston North End, that's important to remember.

"The deal represents excellent business and while we'd have loved to have kept Richard, it was clear he saw his future was elsewhere so there was little we could do.

"We are certainly not a selling club and rumours about other players moving as well are just that, rumours.

"The difficulty for us is the timing. Transfers are rarely quick deals and it may be hard to find someone before the transfer window shuts.

"We have brought in Lewis Neal on the left-wing but I would like further competition there, as well as a striker, but we shall have to see what happens. I wanted to keep this side together, but when a player looks you in the eye and tells you he wants a move there isn't much you can do about it.

"We'll carry on with the squad we have, which I feel is a strong one."

North End had rebuffed three offers for Cresswell from Sheffield United. But the price rose from £500,000 to the final £1.1m, with another £200,000 if Leeds get promotion, and the deal was confirmed on Tuesday.

A first, a £1m bid from Sheffield United was accepted and Cresswell headed there for talks, but then Leeds came in. Paraded before the crowd at Elland Road on Tuesday, Cresswell
