A 22-YEAR-OLD Asian postman was attacked and racially abused by two men who pulled up next to him in a car.

Police in Darwen have appealed for witnesses to the unprovoked attack in Jacks Key Drive but insist this kind of incident is rare in the town.

The man, who did not want to be identified, was delivering mail when a small white car stopped next to him.

It is believed two men got out of the car, approached the postman and began to shout racial abuse at him for no reason.

One of the men, who were both white and in their mid-20s, then punched the man twice in his chest, knocking him to the ground.

They then got back into the car and drove off.

Police confirmed last week racists incidents such as harassment, assault and criminal damage had trebled in Lancashire since the London bombings last month.

But Det Sgt Claire Holbrook, of Darwen CID today said: "I would like to clearly point out that we are fortunate in this part of Lancashire that incidents like this, while concerning, are extremely rare.

"This was an unprovoked attack on a man who was merely going about his daily business in the town.

"He received minor injuries but was very shaken by the incident.

"I am most keen for anyone with information to contact me in confidence."

The incident happened at 10am, on Tuesday, August 2.

The offenders were described as 6ft, with dark short hair and slim.

One of the men was wearing a white T-shirt and black tracksuit pants, while the other was wearing blue jeans and a light-coloured shirt.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: "I can confirm there was an attack on one of our postmen.

"Fortunately, he wasn't seriously hurt and the police are dealing with it."
