The total amount received or pledged to the London Bombings Relief Charitable Fund has now reached £6.32m following a £300,000 donation from British based international relief and development charity Islamic Relief Worldwide.

Dr Hany El-Banna OBE, President, Islamic Relief Worldwide presented the charitys donation to Mayor of London Ken Livingstone at City Hall whilst he was visiting to sign the book of condolences set up after the London bombings on 7 July .

The Mayor said: 'It is wonderful news that this and other donations have pushed the total past the £6 million mark which will enable us to help many people so appallingly afflicted by the terrorist attacks. This great gesture by Islamic Relief underlines the fact that the more terrorists try to divide us the more we unite.

Dr Hany El-Banna said: 'This is the least we can do for our city, our people and our country. We must learn to share the response equally and work more effectively to save our children from all forms of extremism.

We must be united in heart, in thought and in action.

Interim grants of £5,000 have started to be paid to families of the bereaved as well as grants of £3,000 to those who were admitted into hospital overnight as a result of their injuries following the attacks on 7 July 2005. These initial payments will be supplemented at a later stage according to the emerging needs of those affected and the resources available to the Fund.

Donations have been received from companies and from members of the public by phone, by post, over the internet, over the counter at banks and post offices nationwide, and via collection boxes at London Underground stations and in shops across the UK.

The fund was set up by the Mayor of London in association with the British Red Cross, following the bombings in London on 7 July 2005, to enable people who want to give money to assist the victims and their families.

The money from the London Bombings Relief Charitable Fund will provide assistance for the victims and their families as they may be facing a period of prolonged financial uncertainty as well as extra costs. The main source of compensation for victims of the bombings will be the governments statutory Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme.
