Muslim groups speak out after news that bombers were British.
British Muslims Utterly Condemn Acts of Terror (Muslim Council of Britain)
"We must and will be united in common determination that terror cannot succeed. It is now the duty of all us Britons to be vigilant and actively support efforts to bring those responsible to justice"
The Muslim Council of Britain utterly condemns indiscriminate acts of terror in London. These evil deeds make victims of us all. It is our humanity that must bring us shoulder to shoulder to condemn, to oppose and to overcome those who would spread fear, hatred and death.
Our sympathies and our prayers are with the victims, their families and friends. We extend our support and gratitude to the emergency services, the police and all the frontline services charged with our collective security.
"The evil people who planned and carried out these series of explosions in London this morning want to demoralize us as a nation and divide us as a people. All of us must unite in helping the police to capture these murderers. Yesterday we celebrated as Londoners, euphoric that our great city had secured the Olympic Games. Today we watch aghast as we witness a series of brutal attacks upon our capital city. We were together in our celebration, we must remain together in our time of crisis," said Sir Iqbal Sacranie, Secretary General of the MCB.
"We must and will be united in common determination that terror cannot succeed. It is now the duty of all us Britons to be vigilant and actively support efforts to bring those responsible to justice," he added.
What we must do next (Muslim Association of Britain)
The revelation that the perpetrators of the London bombings are Muslims born and bred in this country has come as a shock to all of us and in particular to the British Muslim community. The Muslim Association of Britain reiterates its anger and total condemnation of the terrible attacks on London. MAB believes that the order of priorities must now be as follows:
All communities, including the Muslims, must cooperate with the security agencies in order to prevent any further such attacks. We cannot rule out the possibility of a conspiracy to carry out more attacks in the future, whether near or distant. An urgent measure would be to lend the police a helping hand in their investigations and their efforts to stem the threat altogether.
Secondly, all communities need to join hands in order to thwart any attempt to disrupt the peace and undermine the harmony we have enjoyed despite our diverse races, colours and creeds. There will be those who, by virtue of their racist and xenophobic tendencies, will endeavour to blame the Muslims or Islam for the heinous crime committed by a few misguided individuals. Such attitudes must be confronted and any hate crimes should be severely dealt with.
Thirdly, once the profiles of the perpetrators of the London bombings are fully established and made known to the public the Muslim communities of the United Kingdom will be under obligation to assess whether there was something we could have done to prevent these attacks. More importantly, we need to assess whether there are things we need to, or must, do to help prevent such attacks in the future.
Fourthly, community leaders, clerics, journalists, academics, politicians and decision makers need to face up to the causes of radicalisation of the Muslim youth in the United Kingdom. The question we all have to answer is :What can we do to prevent such radicalisation if the real cause is anger over our foreign policy as has been repeatedly suggested?.
Once the investigations are completed and the jigsaw puzzle is fully resolved, we shall be in a better position to diagnose more accurately what went wrong.
Revulsion and Shock (UK Islamic Mission)
The UK Islamic Mission unequivocally condemns these barbarous acts of criminality, perpetrated in the heart of London. It appears that these incidents were coordinated and indiscriminate, which has resulted in the loss of innocent lives and caused an untold number of injuries.
No words can describe the utter repulsion felt by the Muslim community at the loss and injury of human life. The UKIM would like to re-iterate that the true message of Islam is one of peace, justice, freedom and the love of humanity. Islam holds the sanctity of human life in the highest possible regard and shedding the blood of an innocent person is seen as a most heinous and repulsive crime. We disassociate ourselves from any organisation - claiming to be Muslim or otherwise; which carries out acts which are contradictory to the teachings of Islam.
