PLANS to redevelop a dilapidated sports facility in Nelson have been welcomed.

Jimmy Nelson's, in Wickworth Street, closed about five years ago and councillors have long wanted to see it back in community use -- especially as there is a shortage of sports grounds in the town.

Now plans have been submitted to Pendle Council to provide a gym on the lower ground floor, a licensed restaurant bar on the ground floor, first floor offices and five apartments on a new second floor. The sports facilities would also be reinstated. The plans have been drawn up by Preston-based Mellor Architects.

Councillors are delighted, but neighbours have expressed fears over car parking and access roads.

Nelson Committee chairman Coun David Foster said: "It is an exciting project. If we can put this building back into community use it's a brilliant idea.

"The officers are talking to the developer at the moment and we as councillors want to be involved so we can keep the residents informed on what's going on.

"I would love to see that building come back into community use for sport."

Clover Hill colleague Coun Colin Waite said he hoped the building's name of James Nelson Memorial Sports Ground would continue to be used.

He said: "If members of the community can use it then it's worth us having a look at it. We will have to wait for the officer's report before making a decision.

"It's an important part of Nelson's history and its location makes it a very prominent building within the town. We've got to make sure the history of the place is not lost."

Southfield Coun Sonia Robinson said: "I'd be happy to see it used as a sports centre but I'm not happy the top floor could be turned into flats. I'd like to see accommodation for tourists."
