FIRE fighting in Lancashire could be better, according to a report on the county fire service.
The Audit Commission's 'comprehensive performance assessment' of 47 fire authorities in England says that the Lancashire Combined Fire Authority is only 'fair' overall.
In the report, 22 authorities are rated as 'excellent' or 'good' with Lancashire one of 17 achieving 'fair' status. The remaining six were categorised as 'weak' or 'poor'.
The report says that in Lancashire there is good emergency response but the authority's fire prevention and protection work is not yet having an impact.
Therefore, the numbers of fires in
Lancashire remains very high, with high levels of deaths and injuries.
Tim Watkinson, of the Audit Commission, says: "Lancashire Combined Fire Authority knows what it needs to overcome to make progress."
Adds Government minister Jim Fitzpatrick: "There is clearly room for further improvement."
