AHH, the same tired and incorrect arguments trotted out again by Motorist (Letters, last week).
First, he will find that the vast majority of cyclists own cars as well as bikes and pay all the costs associated with them. But by choosing not to use their vehicles, they are not causing any damage to the road or the environment.
He also seems to forget that pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists use the public highway by right, whereas motorists use it by licence (which many seem to forget is a privilege, not a right).
And, as I sail serenely past queues of stationary cars while cycling to and from work, or go out for a pleasant ride at weekends, knowing that I never need to worry about speeding tickets or finding a place to park, yes, I do consider myself special.
Perhaps next time Motorist wants a day out, he should try cycling. There are plenty of beautiful places with nice pubs and cafes within an easy ride of Morecambe and he won't be polluting the very countryside he sets out to enjoy.
Cyclist, Lancaster (name and address supplied).
