NEW boy Danny Karbassiyoon looks certain to miss Burnley's Championship curtain-raiser at Crewe this weekend.

The former Arsenal defender suffered a recurrence of a hip/groin injury ahead of the final game of the Clarets trip to Austria, which ended in a 1-1 draw with Wacker Burghausen.

And Karbassiyoon will now visit a specialist later in the week to try to get to the root of a problem that has plagued the American for the past fortnight.

Boss Steve Cotterill revealed: "Danny has had a little setback that we are disappointed about.

"It's a worry, so he is going to have a scan today and see a specialist on Thursday.

"He is the one (player) we are really disappointed about because he hasn't done anything yet.

"He limped out of training nearly in tears and it has just come at a terrible time because every new player at a club wants to impress."

However, Michael Duff and Wade Elliot, who was wisely withdrawn 43 minutes into Saturday's game with a slight groin strain, are both expected to resume training tomorrow along with Micah Hyde, who shook off a hamstring problem to complete the last half hour.

And Cotterill is also planning to run the rule over a mystery trialist this week after parting company with Russian Vladimir But, who did not feature against Wacker.

On the game itself, which saw James O'Connor equalise with the last kick of the game to preserve Burnley's unbeaten pre-season record, Cotterill admitted: "We looked really tired.

"Last week we trained long and hard in temperatures around 100 degrees and no matter what we did, we probably wouldn't have been able to get the players into top gear for this game.

"We still could have been two or three goals up by half time, but it was another exercise and we are pleased with the fitness of our players."
