LANCASTER'S pet haven is heading for a crisis - unless more people step forward to help.
The Animal Care sanctuary at Blea Tarn Road is being asked to take in many more stray and unwanted pets than it can find homes for.
Not only are its pet pens filled to capacity but there is a waiting list stretching to 45 dogs and more than 70 cats and kit-tens.
Owners needing urgent help are having to be referred to other pet aid organisations outside the area, says sanctuary manager Stephen Wakelin.
"This is unacceptable," he told the Citizen this week.
"We are an independent local charity based in Lancaster and at breaking point.
"Emergencies are having to be turned away. Every area of the sanctuary is full, with 54 cats and kittens, 35 dogs and more than 50 rabbits and small rodents all looking for loving homes.
"The small team of staff are trying to provide the highest standards of care to each and every animal as well as having to pacify people who ring or call in with various problems which need attention - and we really need people to work with us at this difficult time."
He says the sanctuary can only apologise to people whom it is unable to help immediately and to those on the waiting list.
And he adds: "We appeal to anyone who feels they can offer a long-term loving home to any of our animals to come and visit us.
"Or if you cannot help by re-homing a pet we always welcome volunteers to help with walk-ing dogs each day, cuddling cats or helping to keep the place tidy."
Animal Care is open to the public from 11am to 3pm every day. To help or to find out more, call 01524-65495.
