I WAS concerned to read the article about wheelie bins and boxes in the Ribble Valley (LET, July 13).
Whereas I am all for recycling waste (taking glass, tins, etc, to our local waste recycling site weekly), I do not see why wheelie bins are necessary, especially with the cost this change will incur, not just for the supply of wheelie bins, but also either the cost of altering the present waste trucks or buying new purpose-built trucks.
Mr Sowter says we should "junk sacks" but why not supply households with degradable sacks, as is the case for green waste?
I think the proposed use of boxes for dry waste is sensible and necessary but I do object to wheelie bins.
The article states: "The proposals will now go to public consultation before a final decision is made by the full council." But we are also told that council "members voted to accept the scheme."
Could the public really change these plans or are they already a foregone conclusion?
