THE phrase "Darweners are to be consulted about ..." would probably send a shiver down the spine of most Darreners. Particularly the most cynical among them.

When these words are uttered by a Blackburn with Darwen Council spokesperson, it seems to raise the fears that something in Darwen may be under some kind of threat.

The current consultation revolves around Darwen Leisure Centre. Now the fear has been raised in some minds that the leisure centre may be under some kind of threat -- the worst-case scenario being the current building closing and a new one built.

Maybe expansion is impossible on the current site and a newly built leisure centre is required. However, does this mean that yet another large empty building is to be left in the centre of Darwen to accompany the old technical college, the old health clinic and the recently defunct health centre?

Since Labour came to power in 1997, one of the main beneficiaries throughout the country has been the big corporate developers who have been handed big lucrative contracts for new building work -- rather than make adaptions to existing buildings which are not as profitable to the developers.

A CULVERHOUSE, Cavendish Street, Darwen.
