MANY motorists will be both pleased and angry at news that parking attendants across East Lancashire are making thousands of mistakes when issuing tickets.

In Burnley alone, 1,330 out of 9,314 tickets issued over a seven month period - one in every seven - was cancelled because of parking attendant errors.

Some of these never made it to car windscreens because the attendant typed in an incorrect number.

Motorists will be pleased that tickets issued at places where they thought it was safe to park have been cancelled because of mistakes.

But they will also not be happy that so many mistakes are made.

Parking attendants are necessary because many drivers stupidly and thoughtlessly leave vehicles in places where they are a danger to pedestrians or other motorists.

Others will selfishly hog a space all day and not give fellow drivers a fair chance to park conveniently.

But many more make honest parking errors and feel angry when an attendant waits beside a meter and slaps a ticket on the windscreen the second the penalty flag appears or hides around a corner watching someone illegally park before pouncing.

Too many think they fallen victim to a system which treats the motorist as a money-making machine.
