An action packed activity programme is promised for Burnley boroughs youngsters to get them away from the TV and computer games this summer.
Burnley Council's Junior BEEP programme, starting on 21st July, 2005, is an extension of the successful adult BEEP (Burnley Encouraging Exercise on Prescription) scheme. The junior programme includes advice and support on health eating and lifestyle changes for youngsters aged between 7-11 years old.
The course, organised by the council's health lifestyles team, involves a 12-week programme that aims to make staying healthy fun. The scheme was introduced following national research that shows more youngsters are becoming inactive and overweight, partly through spending too much time in front of the computer and watching TV.
The programme introduces youngsters to the basic concepts of a healthy lifestyle through non-competitive physical activity including group games and fitness sessions. Sport taster sessions include visits to Barden Athletics track, bowling and a climbing wall.
Another aspect of the programme includes tips on healthy eating through food tasting and cookery lessons including making healthy pizzas, smoothies and packed lunches.
Cllr Colette Bailey, the council's Executive member for leisure, said: "This is an excellent initiative allowing young people to get involved in healthy activity, particularly for those who do not consider themselves sporty.
The programme is also a brilliant opportunity for youngsters to make new friends outside of school over the summer months."
Laura Leverentz, the council's healthy lifestyle officer, said: "Feedback from parents and young people on the scheme has been extremely positive and encouraging. It gives young people a greater awareness of the need to be active and of ways in which activity can be included in their daily routine.
"We're not saying don't watch TV or use the computer, just be aware of the benefits of some sort of activity every day."
The next 12-week programme starts on 21st July at Vanguard Community Centre, Bevington Close, Burnley and costs only £15.60 for the full course, payable at the first session. If you are interested in reserving a place please contact Laura on 01282 477323 for a registration pack to be completed and returned at the first session.
