I would like to clear up a couple of points regarding the recent incident at Leyland railway station on June 18.
Lancashire police were the first to be informed and then transport police, who now have the case.
The transport police do not regard Leyland station as a trouble spot but at night it is lit and unsupervised and out of the way.
It's an obvious place for kids to seek refuge from the usual summer efforts by police, and it has been vandalised in the past.
It's the responsibility of the transport police but there are no regular patrols and no CCTV.
There is a real danger from objects placed on the tracks as you have easy access at the station.
You could even drive a car onto the track at Leyland.
CCTV would be much appreciated by the transport police but at the moment Railtrack and Virgin do not seem willing to spend the money.
South Ribble is a safe place on the whole but this sort of incident is disturbing.
Maybe this is an area for television's Watchdog programme to get involved. It would be good if the witnesses would come forward to the transport police on 01772 551320.
Councillor Derek Forrest,
South Ribble councillor for Leyland St Ambrose.
