HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS 32, LEIGH CENTURIONS 22: Poor execution and even worse discipline cost the Centurions the chance of their first away victory of a torrid campaign.
As Leigh battled back in the second half to give themselves sniff of victory, they ruined four good scoring opportunities with wrong decision-making. On the back of that they gave away a string of penalties that the accurate Chris Thorman gratefully accepted to keep the Giants at arms' length.
Yet with less than five minutes to play Leigh were still in it at 22-26 until Oli Wilkes threw out a wild pass and Giants' sub Hefin O'Hare intercepted to go half the length of the pitch for the decider.
It was a little rough on Leigh who had seen the Giants reduced to 12 men early on when full-back Paul Reilly was sent off for a high shot on Danny Halliwell.
By that stage Leigh had gone 6-0 down to an early James Evans try and Thorman penalty before Phil Jones kicked the first two of five goals to bring Leigh back into it.
The penalty count continued to mount and Thorman stretched Huddersfield's lead before the half-back capitalised on a Brad Drew break to shimmy his way over for a try. Thorman added the goal and another penalty for a 16-4 lead.
Right on the stroke of half time Leigh gave themselves a chance when Mike Govin went 40 metres for a solo try. Jones's conversion left Leigh only a converted try adrift.
Within two minutes of the re-start Jones had further closed the gap with another penalty before Leigh lost Wilkes to the sin-bin and then shipped a try to Jon Grayshon. Three penalties in quick succession by Thorman gave the Giants a flattering 26-12 lead.
Smart tries by Steve Maden and John Wilshere put Leigh in with a great chance of victory but as they pushed the ball wide in the closing minutes O'Hare pounced to give the Giants both points.
