THE former school head of mathematics has died suddenly.

Bill Martin, who also did much in and around Atherton Parish, where he was treasurer at St George's for 40 years and a governor at both St George's and St Philip's, was 78.

He had taken suddenly ill at home at the weekend, only two days after attending a function at St Philip's School.

After his retirement in 1981 from Fred Longworth School in Tyldesley, he continued his charity work and was treasurer of Friends of Atherleigh Hospital until its closure and was also treasurer of Pensioners Link in Leigh.

He leaves a wife, Edith, two sons and grandchildren.

Donations in his memory will be donated by his family to Pensioners Link and the church building fund. There is to be a memorial service in January.
