GRITTING lorries throughout East Lancashire have been working overtime to ensure motorists can get about, but care is still advised.

The lack of traffic over the Christmas period means the grit has not been activated on some roads and drivers are warned to take care, slow down and beware of black ice.

Burnley and Pendle Transport and Rossendale Transport both report that a full service has been maintained throughout the festive period despite the big freeze.

Inspector Dave Holden, of Burnley police, said that several motorists had not been fully cleaning their windscreens before setting off and he reminded them that it is not only extremely dangerous but an offence which is punishable with a fixed penalty.
