YOUNG Fylde women could find inspiration for their engineering careers from the 1995 Young Woman Engineer of the Year if a local nominee takes the title next month.

Pamela Wilson, 29, has been picked as one of six finalists for the prestigious award after years of successful work with British Aerospace in Warton. Pamela, who lives in St Annes, is senior avionic systems engineer at the Fylde company in the Eurofighter 2000 cockpit group.

The Young Woman Engineer of the Year award is presented to role-models for girls interested in engineering.

Although she has been nominated for the award before, Pamela believes she has a better chance of getting the title this year.

She explained: "I was the runner-up in 1992, but since then I have been promoted to a more managerial post and I have visited schools to talk to girls about becoming an engineer. This is also my last chance of winning the title, as only women under 30 are eligible - and I am now 29.

"The award wouldn't change my career in any way. It would just bring me the prestige."

The winner will be announced at a ceremony in London on January 9 and will collect £750 and a silver rose bowl.
