WHEN instructor Nick Smart gave a martial arts lesson at Preston's Age Concern Centre, he found the spectators were just as keen as the students.
Nick was teaching a class of young students the ancient art of Wingtchun at the centre in Lancaster Road, Preston.
But to his surprise, the pensioners visiting the centre were so intrigued by his self defence techniques, they asked to join in.
As a result Nick has set up a new class - just for elderly people.
Nick who is head of the Pro-am Wingtchun Organisation International, explained: "This is the first course I have run in self-protection for the elderly. I think it's very suitable for them.
"The pensioners were impressed by the simplicity of movements and the lack of strength and agility required."
He added: "It isn't a ballistic type of martial art. We do low kicks. We do everyday sort of movements which have been broken down to form the basis of an attack, so you don't have to do a lot of strenuous training."
The course also teaches people common sense responses and how to pacify potentially explosive situations. You can call Nick on 01704-531331.
