EVENTS that will put Bury 'Streets Ahead' are likely to be seen on May 6 when organisers expect thousands of people will be drawn to the town. Working together on this major promotion are Bury Chamber of trade, the local authority, and The Met Arts Centre.
All three are looking at Streets Ahead, a Manchester-wide initiative which began in 1995.
Bury considered joining in, but couldn't do so because they were given too short a notice.
But now the organisers have plenty of time and they are planning to have the town's streets filled with large and small scale events.
Some of them may come from companies in Europe, and it is anticipated they will draw thousands of people from around the region.
It is hoped to close off streets around Market Street and The Rock, and set up three stages, possibly on The Rock, by the Peel Monument and in Kay Gardens.
Performances will be timed to move people around the town as they follow a timetable of activities.
It is hoped the streets will be filled with stalls, and that shops and pubs will be open so as people move around the sites they will shop, and buy food and drink.
If Bury pulls together this event could be the first choice for tens of thousands of people looking for an entertaining way to spend their Bank Holiday.
It will benefit the town and its traders, and if it works this year the organisers say it could become an annual event and a focus for the town's promotion which people will look forward to.
