Bury 0 - Northampton 1 ONE moment of madness cost Bury the valuable three points last Saturday against close promotion contenders Northampton town, writes Dany Robson. A sloppy back pass by Ian Hughes was latched onto by eleven- goal striker, Jason White, and he made no mistake to score the only goal of the game. Shakers manager Stan Ternent was fuming after the match:
"It was a disappointing game and a disappointing result. We have gone and done it again - we have shot ourselves in the foot.
"The way we give goals away is totally unprofessional. It is absolutely ridiculous but I have to take the flack for it because I picked the team," said the diappointed manager.
The game itself was a dour encounter made more difficult by a bumpy pitch.
Although Bury dominated the possession there were few clear- cut chances.
The best fell to Chris Lucketti whose header, from two yards out, on the half hour, was pushed out by Cobblers' 'keeper Andy Woodman; although the Shakers protested that it had crossed the line.
Minutes later Lucketti was involved in the action again when his suspect tackle stopped dangerman White streaking free. Lucketti was lucky to stay on the pitch.
It was left for Northampton to show the Shakers how to finish. On 51 minutes White coolly capitalised on Bury's mistake and slotted the ball passed the otherwise redundant Lee Bracey.
Phil Stant was gifted a similar chance to equalise a few minutes later when the Cobblers' defence slipped - up but he fired inches wide.
This summed up Bury's day. They pressurised until the death but could not find the back of the net.
New signing Rob Matthews made some promising runs but did not feature strongly in this frustrating game.
"They were hungrier than us," said Stan Ternent. "This, in my opinion, is ridiculous and hard to accept.
"It is something we have tried to eliminate from the club for a while and obviously we have not succeeded".
Defender Micheal Jackson said: "Silly mistakes are costing us games. We cannot afford to give goals away like that."
