SPEEDY ambulance crews in East Lancashire are quickest off the blocks when racing to 999 calls.

Figures revealed today show that emergency response times in the county were fastest in the Blackburn and Burnley areas.

Ambulance bosses disclosed that almost 74 per cent of 999 calls in East Lancashire reached their location in eight minutes or under. The percentage figure compared favourably to 53 per cent in South Lancashire and 67 per cent in North West Lancashire.

The figures, released by the Lancashire Ambulance NHS Trust, are based between October and December last year.

The Burnley area topped the chart, with three quarters of emergency calls reached in eight minutes or under, closely followed by Blackburn (73 per cent). Both were well above the national standard of 50 per cent.

Burnley also came out on top in reaching emergencies within 19 minutes (99 per cent). Again Blackburn followed in its footsteps on 98 per cent with other Lancashire districts lagging behind.
