HOW you hold the golf club is very, very important and will have a great bearing on ultimately how well you play the game.

While teaching it never ceases to amaze me how many people overlook their grip in the search to improve their game. A good grip can never guarantee a good golf swing, but a faulty grip can definately ruin a potentially good golf swing.

The correct grip will

Allow your hands to work together throughout your swing

Maintain a firm yet supple hold on the golf club

Deliver the clubface back to the ball in a square position - facing the target

Your hands should be connected together - the overlapping or interlocking grip. Both V's formed by the thumb and forefinger of each hand should point to the right shoulder and the right side of the face.
