PARAMEDICS treated a woman driver at the scene of an accident at the East Lancashire Railway's Bolton Street station last Thursday afternoon. Fire services and the police also rushed to the scene near St. Mary's Place where the woman, identified as Christina Helm from Scholes Street in Bury, crashed through railings in her Mazda 323 hatchback.
It had then bounced off two stationary railway carriages, forty feet below, before landing upright on the station's Platform Two.
The 42 year old woman, who remained conscious throughout her ordeal, suffered leg and slight head injuries and was taken to Bury General Hospital.
Stan Brakewell, a station worker told the Journal: "I heard a loud noise and when I went to look I saw a car had crashed through the railings and landed on the platform.
"It was horrific any further and the car would have landed on the railway track."
The Mazda was extensively damaged, with the two railway carriages suffering slight damage.
