DESPITE the absence of a Traffic commissioner and a lack of action from the Government transport transport bosses in Greater Manchester have acted to improve standards on local bus travel. The traffic commissioner enforces bus regulations and standards for all services, but the area doesn't have one and Transport Authority Policy Committee chairman Councillor Jack Flanagan is asking why.

He said this week: "Improving the standards of bus travel is something government ministers have recently pledged support for.

"Why then has no date been set to fill the vacancy we have for a Traffic Commissioner?

In the meantime Greater Manchester PTA's policy committee has approved new contract conditions for subsidised bus services - a move which should raise overall bus travel standards.

For the first time they include a code of conduct for drivers.

And as drivers operate both subsidised and commercial services Councillor Flanagan claims that overall standards of customer care should improve.
