RUGBY star David Leatherbarrow has paid an everlasting tribute to his Grandad.

The 15-year-old youngster has just signed for Widnes at the outset of a blooming career in Rugby League.

But his No 1 fan missed his big moment.

"Grandad Thomas died last September," explained David.

"But his name will live on with me in my professional career.

"I have taken up the name David Thomas Leatherbarrow - and that's how I will sign myself in future."

David, the first youngster from the Golborne Phoenix club to sign professional forms, has been playing rugby since he was nine.

And his grandfather had been his staunchest supporter.

He died, aged 71, just 24 hours before the youngster was chosen to represent Wigan Schoolboys.

David, of Braithwaite Road, Lowton, has also played for Lowton West Junior & Infant School and Golborne High, where he is now a student. Away from school his career blossomed with Golborne Parkside, Leigh Rangers and Phoenix.

He toured France with Golborne High and also featured with Leigh Schoolboys U11s.

"My Mum and Dad and sister Stephanie have always been 100 per cent behind me," said David.

"But Grandad was my biggest fan."
