A DRUG smuggler who carried Ecstasy and Speed worth £5.6 million into Britain has been jailed for six years.
John Moore, 23, of Dunmail Avenue, Moss Bank, who says he was sucked into the crime by others, smuggled nearly 400,000 Ecstasy tablets worth £5 million and 3.64 kilos of speed, worth £600,000, with coach boss Trevor Haskayne.
Haskayne, manager and director of Montravel, used a shopping trip to Holland by coach as a cover.
Moore, who admitted the charge, and his 20-year-old wife flew from Manchester to Amsterdam on December 3, 1994.
Passengers saw Moore walk to the coach carrying three holdalls. During the journey to Calais via Dunkirk, another passenger saw Haskayne give Moore £80.
Haskayne put a sign on the coach, which was the only one on the trip, saying "Dunkirk Shopper, Coach 2", so that they could pass through customs quickly.
But the luggage was searched and a sniffer dog found the drugs in five holdalls.
Moore was sentenced to six years for smuggling Ecstasy and three years, to run concurrently, for the the amphetamine.
