A MAIN road through a village is not busy enough for a pedestrian crossing to be installed even though up hundreds of vehicles an hour use it.
Councillors have been campaigning for the crossing on the busy Gisburn Road, Barrowford, near to Pendle Brook House elderly people's centre.
They are dismayed by the county surveyor's decision that the number of people crossing the road there did not warrant a crossing.
Surveys of traffic in the area show the amount of traffic using the road is falling.
In April 1993, during the busy rush hours between 8am and 9am and 4pm to 5pm, 1,017 vehicles passed the point on both hours, compared to 730 and 560 in November 1995.
During the two hours a total of 110 people crossed the road in 1993 compared to 124 last November.
Barrowford councillor Allan Vickerman said: "I'd like him to come down there and see the condition of the road.
"One thousand vehicles in an hour is a large number in my eyes. It's enough to warrant a crossing."
Members of Barrowford and Western Parishes committee decided not to approve double yellow lines on Gisburn Road between Halstead Lane and Church Street because they felt it would encourage drivers to speed.
