Lancaster City 2 Netherfield 2 LANCASTER broke their Northern Premier League record of 14 games without defeat on Saturday but had to settle for another draw against local rivals Netherfield. Run-away leaders City seemed to have everything under control when good work by Peter Borrowdale allowed Jay Flannery to fire a screaming 20-yard shot past Netherfield 'keeper Jim Wood after just 50 seconds. The reshuffled City defence missing the suspended Paul Byron and Barrie Stimpson was rarely threatened in the first half with City looking dangerous every time they went forward.

The Blues extended their lead after 28 minutes when Mark Shirley went on a strong run into the penalty area and slipped a pass across to Borrowdale who tapped the ball home.

With Lancaster leading 2-0 at half-time, the points looked secure enough but the game was turned on its head in the 51st minute when referee Michael Dean awarded a penalty to Netherfield for a handball against Brian Curwen. Darren Emmett made no mistake from the spot.

That goal inspired Netherfield and they put some serious pressure on the City defence which eventually cracked in the 73rd minute when David Renwick rose to head a corner past Mark Thornley.

As time ticked away, Lancaster looked the more likely to grab a winner and Borrowdale seemed to have done just that when his shot beat the 'keeper but was hacked off the line by an alert defender. TEAM: Thornley, Curwen, Chilton, Key, Eatough, Shirley, Trainor, Sharples, Diggle, Borrowdale, Flannery. SUBS: Whittaker, Williams, Moran.
