THE Independent Police Complaints Authority is carrying out an investigation into the death of woman in a cell at St Helens police station.

Forty-one-year-old Barbara Noonan, a textile worker from Downland Way, Parr, was found slumped in her cell with a ligature round her neck at 4pm last Friday (March 1). She had been arrested two hours earlier after an allegation of theft from a St Helens town centre store.

Mrs Noonan, a mother-of-two was rushed to the accident and emergency department of Whiston Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

A post-mortem was carried out by a Home Office pathologist and initial findings established the cause of death as self asphyxiation.
