THE three-horse Tameside and North Manchester Premier League title race saw Woodbank, of Bury, edge into the driving seat this week when Denton Villa came back from a three goal home deficit to draw 4-4 with second placed Radcliffe Borough.
Woodbank took advantage of the stalemate, winning 4-1 at Ashton United.
Woodbank survived constant Ashton pressure in the opening quarter with Christian Gibbs in outstanding form between the sticks.
Very much against the run of play the visitors took the lead on 24 minutes when Peter Lunn cut a corner back to the edge of the box for Wayne Dalton to volley home.
The second period was all Woodbank and another Lunn Corner was met by Carl Greenhalgh who drive home from ten yards.
It was Greenhalgh again who fed Danny English for Wayne Dalton to finish off a crisp one-two.
The twin substitution of strikers saw Rob Phillips set up Stuart Hutton for number 4 before Ashton notched a late consolation goal.
On Sunday Woodbank visit Seel Park. Mossley, (ko 2pm) for the League cup semi-final.
